TFW2005’s Transformers Legends Hardhead Gallery Now Online

$

Next in the limelight from Takara-Tomy’s Transformers Legends releases of Titans Return toys, we are taking a look at Hardhead!

Hardhead is one of the best early releases in the Titans Return line, with a faithful update of his original design. The tank mode is solid, while the robot mode is pleasingly poseable, and even has wrist swivels, which is a rarity in recent releases. Hasbro’s version has grey plastic on the cannons and torso, as well as a faceplate like the original toy, but for this one, we had to go with the Takara version, less for the tan plastic that replaces the grey, and more for the “mouth” head which is more accurate to IDW’s comics and both of the cartoons Hardhead featured in.

Overall, Hardhead is a great early release in the Titans Return line. We’ve been looking forward to sharing our pics of this one with you – we hope you enjoy them!

Hasbro Returns To UK Toy Fair After Two Years Of Absence

$

For the past two years Hasbro left an unfillable void at the annual UK Toy Fair (sometimes known as the London Toy Fair) organized by The British Toy and Hobby Association. For many years, the company was the biggest sponsor and the biggest exhibitor of the show. Back in 2016, Hasbro declined to participate as they had their hands full with other European toy shows happening at the same time. The decision continued on with the 2017 fair as well. This created an industry-wide ‘domino effect’ where certain UK companies declined to participate on the fair due to the absence of Hasbro (and later Mattel).

Happily however, the word we received across the pond suggests that an agreement has been made by Hasbro to participate at next year’s UK Toy Fair. The 2018 show will not only have Hasbro back as an exhibitor, the company will also be taking up two conjoining show rooms on the upper Gallery Suites section.

Hasbro will be showcasing their upcoming toys to the ‘independent retail trade’. It was stated that this year’s focus will be toy ranges specifically tailored to indies. Hasbro is said to be working hard to differentiate its ranges for individual retail channels. We are yet to find out what these ranges are and the motive behind the new business tactic. Our best guess is the recent news of Toys”R”Us announcing the closure of significant number of stores in the UK. The toy giant seems to be looking for viable options to push its toylines in the absence of a notable toy retailer.

Few days ago, the company has invited toy journalists residing in the United Kingdom for a preview of what they will display at the Toy Fair. We have learned that this information is under embargo until a certain unspecified conditions have been met.

We also assume that Hasbro display cases will be kept away from the general public eye at UK Toy Fair 2018.

UK Toy Fair 2018 will take place from 23rd January to 25th January at Olympia London. Stay tuned with TFW2005 for more news on other companies showcasing licensed Transformers products at the show.

First In-Hand Images Of Transformers Authentics Toyline Wave 1

Transformers Authentics toyline is being distributed around the world and the first market to receive the new toys is Philippines. 2005 Boards Member Ikkad is bringing us our in-hand look at the figures straight from the country.

Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Megatron and Starscream are all significantly larger than the current Legion Class figures and the reviewer suggests that they are approximately Scout Class sized. This is actually a good news to hear, especially considering the fact that the toys are only priced at around US$ 5.

The not-so-happy-news comes from the plastic and the paint which is of lower quality than any other main line Transformers figures.

Megatron and Starscream are well articulated in robot mode when compared with the two Autobots; Optimus Prime and Bumblebee. The build quality is also high on the two Decepticons. All four figures have 3 to 6 step Transformation similar to McDonald’s Happy Meal Transformers figures of the Animated era.

Check out the full review, after the jump.

Review by 2005 Boards Member Ikkad

They were all at my local department store today (The price, just to reiterate, is in Philippine Peso).

It’s a bad figure. The lack of elbows really restrict poseability, and the hollow legs prevent you from standing him up in most poses. The four step transformation is actually a bit interesting, as it differs from the Optimus standard. However, it results in the use of fake chest windows. The plastic is very cheap.

Here are some comparisons with the two other small Optimus molds. It’s funny how the guy is taller than the T30 Legends.

Dan Salgarolo Joins Transformers: Cyberverse

Updating his official Twitter profile, Mr. Dan Salgarolo has announced that he has joined the production crew of Transformers: Cyberverse, the upcoming Transformers animated series by Boulder Media Studio.

Transformers: Robots In Disguise (2015) fans will immediately recognize Dan Salgarolo as the Writers’ Assistant and Script Coordinator of the aforementioned show. He was very enthusiastic of the work he did for RID during its run and maintained a health relationship with the cast and the crew of the show.

Based on his bio, Dan Salgarolo will reprise his role as a Writers’ Assistant for the upcoming cartoon series as well. It’s hard to tell with the comma, but he may also be a screenwriter for the new show. He is indeed a welcome addition to the team.

We wish him the very best on tasks ahead.

Zeta Toys ZB-03 Silver Arrow (G1 Silverbolt) Prototype Images

3P company Zeta Toys has shared prototype images of their ZB-03 Silver Arrow which is their take on G1 Silverbolt.

ZB-03 Silver Arrow is part of Zeta Toys Kronos (Superion/Aerialbots) and it’s the third full reveal after ZB-01 Flyfire (G1 Fireflight) and ZB-02 Airstrike (G1 Air Raid).  The images of the prototype shared via Zeta Toys Weibo show us the figure from different angles in robot mode, revealing the details and the way the mold managed to integrate the alt mode parts. While no comparison image with a Masterpiece figure was shared, we have a comparison size image next to ZB-02 Airstrike where we can see how big Silver Arrow is.

As an extra bonus, a new image shared by DM-Toys on Weibo reveals that the jet’s nose can be configured to look like the Concorde’s droop-nose. We have no information on price or release date yet, but we will share it when it’s available.

You can check out the mirrored images on this news post and then join to the discussion at the 2005 Boards.

TFW2005’s Transformers Legends Skullcruncher Gallery Now Online

Our next gallery is the Takara-Tomy Transformers Legends version of Titans Return Skullsmasher aka Skullcruncher.

Skullcruncher, or Skull in Japanese, was the other classic Headmaster to get a makeover as a part of Titans Return Wave 1, as well as one of the first animal Transformers in a couple of years. Compared to the original, this new Skullcruncher’s alligator mode looks considerably more ferocious, not that the original was any slouch. The robot mode nails the look of Skullcruncher too, and one cool if unintended feature is the transformation of the arms, which can allow the alligator mode feet to flip down over the hands like knuckledusters. However while he looks impressive, Skullcruncher is far from flawless. Loose hips are a known issue, although our Takara-Tomy one did not suffer here, and the legs and feet are largely hollow, which can make balance a little trickier than it needs to be. Like all the Takara-Tomy versions, Skullcruncher has a head that looks like the Generation 1 version rather than a reinterpretation, and it is up to the individual which version they prefer. We’re just happy to have the choice.

Though Power Of The Primes Leader Class Wave 1 figures are yet to be spotted at retail, we have our first in-hand video of Rodimus Prime, all the way from China.

The video is approximately 30 minutes long and highlights the transformation and other major points.

Update: Another 15 minute long video (and again from China) has surfaced which highlights much the same.

An “Evolution Leader”, Rodimus Prime is formed from a smaller “Hot Rod” car robot, who combines with his trailer to become Rodimus Prime. The figure includes a Matrix, which the core can detach from and interchange with other Prime Masters.

You can check out both videos, after the jump.

Via TFW2005 member Platium, we can report that one of the last Robots in Disguise toys has hit retail in Singapore. The Crash Combiners Bisk and Saberhorn two pack was spotted at Isetan Nex. There’s no word on if the Optimus Prime and Grimlock (Primelock) set was also out in Singapore, but the pair share an assortment, and since Bisk & Saberhorn were the last one on the pegs, it seems likely someone got them before our man Platium.  So it sounds as if the last Robots in Disguise Crash Combiners have hit retail in Singapore. TFW2005’s Transformers Legends Highbrow Gallery Now Online

$

It’s time for another gallery update, and we’re carrying on with the Takara-Tomy Legends versions of the Titans Return Headmasters. Next up: Highbrow!

Highbrow skews more toward the “reinvention” end of the scale of updating classic characters in the Generations line. While he’s a faithful update to the design of his original toy, Hasbro also took the right liberties when designing this one to make it look like a serviceable helicopter. And what a vehicle it is – we feel he’s got one of the best vehicle modes of all the Titans Return toys, and it helps that it is something different from what we normally see for a Transformer’s vehicle form. The robot mode is equally nicely done, with decent poseability and great balance, as well as some excellent guns that do a good job of updating the original Highbrow’s weapons. Takara’s release here offers more paint on the torso and blue hands at the expense of some of the detail paint Hasbro had on the shoulders. The head is also different, arguably this is one case where Hasbro had the better looking noggin.

Those nitpicks aside, Highbrow is a fantastic toy whether you picked up the Hasbro one or the Takara-Tomy one. Check out his gallery and see for yourself:

TFW2005’s Transformers Legends Mindwipe Gallery Now Online

$

Next up, we’re rounding off our coverage of the Takara-Tomy releases of the Transformers Legends Headmasters with the Decepticon hypnotist, Mindwipe!

Mindwipe has perhaps one of the most creative transformations to come out of the line in recent times. His bat wings neatly fold up to make his legs, while a set of smaller wings create the illusion that his wings have just “shrunk” for the robot mode. It’s a great and creative touch, one that makes for a slimmer robot profile than the Generation 1 toy, who I always felt was a little boxy. It’s also one of three Deluxes within the Titans Return line who we feel have really raised the bar on how creatively these toys can change between modes (Triggerhappy and Topspin are the other two). Takara’s release sports a dramatically different paint job to Hasbro’s version, with a deco based on the Headmasters cartoon version / toy complete with purple arms and red bat wings. The head is also redone to reflect Mindwipe’s high cheekbones and long chin from the Headmasters animation. As usual, it depends on how you feel about Mindwipe if you feel this one or the Hasbro version are the better looking – but however you color it, and whatever head you put on it, it remains a cool toy.
